You’ve seen them. Those soft, half-donut-shaped pillows that are cozily cradled around a mother’s waist while she feeds her baby. These nursing pillows, like the Boppy Nursing Pillow and UpliftTM Nursing Pillow, have become a popular staple for moms and a sought-after item on baby registries. But what are the benefits of using a nursing pillow? What advantages do they offer? What should you consider if you decide to purchase one?

To help answer these questions, we reached out to Abrie McCoy, an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant and Care Delivery Manager at SimpliFed (a virtual platform that offers pregnancy and postpartum care and support). McCoy shared some insights on the benefits of nursing pillows and tips for using them effectively.

BabyCenter: What is a nursing pillow and how does it work? Are there different sizes and shapes?

Abrie McCoy: A nursing pillow is specifically designed to provide support for both you and baby while breastfeeding or bottle feeding. Its primary goal is to create a comfortable feeding environment, making it easy – especially since many moms are feeding their little ones 8 to 12 times a day! There are various styles, sizes, and firmness levels available, so it’s a good idea to try out different options to find the one that works best for you and your little one.

BC: What are the primary benefits of using a nursing pillow for both the baby and the parent?

AM: It offers comfort during feeding sessions. Given that you will be feeding your baby several times a day, it’s essential for both of you to be as comfortable as possible. Nursing pillows are particularly beneficial for feeding newborns as you adjust to your routine and discover what works. These pillows help support your baby, providing a stable platform while breastfeeding or bottle feeding. They elevate your baby to breast height, reducing the need for moms to lean too far forward, which can prevent neck and back strain. Additionally, they can also be great for travel, making for easier feeding on the go.

BC: Does a nursing pillow help with latch and feeding?

AM: Yes, it does! We always recommend bringing the baby to the breast and not the other way around. A nursing pillow can help you do this and gives you the best chance at an ideal latch. Proper support is very important.

BC: Can a nursing pillow help prevent common feeding issues like gas or reflux?

AM: Absolutely. The extra support ensures that the baby is being what we call ‘pace-fed’ and this means they are in an upright position with a moderate flow. This type of feeding is essential to avoiding gas and reflux, and a nursing pillow also helps make your baby feel cozier.

A pillow with a slight slope or angle (like the Boppy Uplift™) can be especially helpful for babies with reflux because it allows their head to be elevated above their torso.

BC: What other uses does a nursing pillow have? Is it safe for a baby to sleep on?

AM: These pillows are designed solely for feeding. It is not safe to use in any other way, and we do not recommend doing so. You should never put a nursing pillow in the crib, bassinette, playpen, or anywhere that a baby sleeps.

BC: What are some tips for proper positioning?

AM: First, support your baby’s entire body and make sure there is extra support at their head and neck. Next, bring your baby to your breast, not the other way around. Hold them belly to belly so that you are close together.

For bottle feeding, prop your baby in your lap in a semi-upright position on the pillow, supporting the head and neck.

BC: Are there any safety concerns moms should look out for?

AM: Yes, we recommend doing your research before purchasing a nursing pillow or any product for your baby. As mentioned earlier, these pillows should not be used for sleeping or lounging. Never lie a baby face down on the pillow or leave them unattended on one, especially on a bed, couch, or elevated surface.

Mothers should also keep this in mind: If you are using the pillow while breastfeeding and you’re starting to feel sleepy, remove the baby immediately from the pillow and put them in a safe sleeping place. You want to avoid any suffocation or falling hazards for your baby. I also recommend that mothers reach out to a lactation consultant or pediatrician if they have questions.

Try one of these six different breastfeeding positions to keep feeding time more comfortable.

BC: How do you clean a nursing pillow? How often?

AM: Most nursing pillows come with removable covers that can be washed. Whenever the cover gets dirty (spit up happens!), you can simply take it off and toss it in the washing machine. Wash it on the same cycle as your sheets and baby blankets.

Here’s the bottom line: If you’re breastfeeding or even bottle feeding, a nursing pillow can be a valuable addition to your nursery and will certainly come in handy during feeding sessions. If you're considering a nursing pillow for purchase or your registry, pillows like Boppy's New Nursing Pillow and the Uplift™ Nursing Pillow are excellent choices. Most nursing pillows  come in various styles and colors, have washable covers, and are filled with hypoallergenic, recycled fiber. They provide versatile support for different baby-holding positions, and can help position your gassy or reflux-prone baby, making feedings more comfortable while helping to minimize spit-ups.

Most importantly, they bring your little one closer to you during feeding, enhancing the bonding experience between both of you. That is definitely a win in our book.
