What Your Partner Should Pack in Their Hospital Bag
Sure, you’re the one having the baby here—but you don’t want to get to the hospital on the big day only to discover that your partner hasn’t even packed a toothbrush or a clean pair of socks for themselves. A trip home might not be an option if your labor lasts for longer than planned; here are a few ideas for items they should bring to the hospital when it’s time.
A change of clothes.
Encourage your partner to bring at least one change of clothes; they won’t want to sit in the same outfit they came in, especially if your labor lasts for more than a few hours.
Reading material for while you’re in labor.
Remind them to pack a book or a magazine to read while you’re laboring. (They’ll thank you later.)
Toiletries for a few days.
A toothbrush, toothpaste, razor and other basic toiletries will freshen your partner up and get them feeling prepared to cheer you on in your big moment.
Ask them to bring at least 20 dollars in cash and change for snacks, phone calls to family members and any of your miscellaneous cravings or whims.
A wristwatch (or phone app) with a second hand.
Make sure one of you has a watch with a second hand, so your partner can time your contractions. They’ll be able to tell you when your next one is coming, calming you down.
A cell phone to keep in touch with family.
Be sure your partner has a cell phone when you head to the hospital. They can call friends and family to update them on your progress —and announce the big news when your baby arrives. (Be sure to remind him to pack the charger as well!)
A pillow or a blanket.
If your partner spends the night with you at the hospital, the staff will bring in a cot or turn down a reclining chair in your room. Bringing their own pillow from home can go a long way toward helping them be more comfortable (and better rested).
Your laptop or tablet.
More and more hospitals have Wi-Fi in birthing and recovery rooms. Call ahead and find out if yours does as well —if so, packing a laptop can help you and your partner stay in touch with friends and family.
