BOPPY® PILLOW MEETS FLAMMABILITY REQUIREMENTS WITHOUT FLAME RETARDANT CHEMICALS

Boppy® Pillow Misrepresented in Stroller Brigade March

GOLDEN, Colo. (May 31, 2012) – Last week, in the press and social coverage of the Stroller Brigade March in Washington, D.C., in support of the “Safe Chemicals Act of 2011” the Boppy® Pillow was shown as an example of an unacceptable product. This was misleading. The Boppy Feeding & Infant Support Pillow is a safe product that does not contain flame retardants.

“We believe in safe baby products and adhere to industry standards,” said Nancy Bartley, CEO, The Boppy Company. “We want to clarify that our product doesn’t contain flame retardants. It’s unfortunate that the March organizers didn’t check their facts regarding the products they were using to illustrate their point.”

Last year, Environmental Science and Technology published a study regarding the existence of chemical flame retardants in various childrens’ products. The research article, “Identification of Flame Retardants in Polyurethane Foam Collected from Baby Products,” listed that nursing pillows were tested in the study. The Boppy® Pillow, which is marketed as a feeding and infant support pillow and may be referred to by consumers as a nursing pillow, meets flammability requirements without the addition of flame retardant chemicals and is not made of foam.

All bedding items containing filling material must meet certain flammability standards to be sold in the U.S. The State of California has the strictest standards and all Boppy Pillows are manufactured to meet the flammability requirements of the California Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation. The fabric and filling in the Boppy Feeding and Infant Support Pillow (and slipcovers for those pillows) meet the requirements without the addition of flame retardant chemicals. More information about the study can be accessed at: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/es2007462.
